Youth

Refuge 980 is the student ministry at Northside Baptist Church in Huntsville, Texas. We serve the students in our church and in our community from grades 7 through 12.
Refuge 980 is designed to be an outlet that teenagers can be involved in to take refuge from the temptations and responsibilites they face daily. We strive to provide an atmosphere that welcomes teenagers and encourages and challenges them in their relationship with Jesus Christ. We want our students to know that the ultimate refuge is the one taken in God’s love. We offer three programs for our students to help them in their relationship with God: Refuge on Wednesday’s, Bible Study on Sunday mornings, and Guy Talk/Girl Talk on Sunday evenings. We also offer many activities throughout the school year and summer to provide a fun and encouraging opportunity for students to hang out together, grow closer to each other and deepen their relationship with Christ.
Programs
Sunday Morning
For this school year, we’re going through the Student Life Bible Study based on a covenant relationship with Christ. Sunday mornings we split by ages. Our Jr. High class is taught by Rodney and Macey Cooksey, and our High School class is taught by Nolan and Leslie Nichols. Sunday mornings we meet at 9:40 AM.
Sunday Night
We’re taking a different approach to Sunday nights this year. Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings seem to be so busy that we miss the opportunity for fellowship. We begin at 6:00 PM by splitting in two groups by gender. We call it Guy Talk/Girl Talk. Each gender is led by youth workers of the same gender and gives us the opportunity to touch on topics and have discussions that are specifically geared for what teenage guys and teenage girls are struggling with and dealing with. The students love the freedom to be more relaxed in a room of just guys or just girls. We usually try to finish up a few minutes early so students can hang out in the youth building with each other for a while.
Wednesday Night
Wednesday nights at refuge 980 have a flavor of their own. We spend time praising Jesus through song, compete in group and individual challenges and games, and are challenged through a message from our Youth Pastor, Bob Slie. Students love the relaxed atmosphere found on Wednesday nights. Our new youth building is open before and after our meeting offering students pool, air hockey, foosball, music and Playstation 3 Video Games. We meet on Wednesday’s from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
